What is a dental check-up?
During a dental check-up, your dentist will carefully examine your teeth, mouth, and gums to ensure your oral health is in good condition. This appointment also allows them to identify any potential issues you may have.
Regular check-ups are important, and your dentist will recommend how frequently you should schedule them based on your individual needs. At the end of your visit, your dentist will inform you when your next appointment should be.
How long does a check-up last?
The dentist will investigate your oral healthy by checking your teeth, gums and mouth. A normal private checkup can last 20 to 40minutes depending on the patients dental needs.
What is involved in a checkup?
During each dental check-up, your dentist will:
- Examine your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and overall mouth.
- Ask about any issues or discomfort you may have experienced since your last visit.
- Offer advice on ways to improve your oral health, including diet tips, brushing techniques, and general oral hygiene practices.
Your dentist may also take X-rays to detect hidden issues such as decay or bone loss caused by gum disease.
If there is a significant buildup of plaque, you may be referred to a hygienist for a scale and polish, or your dentist may perform this procedure during the check-up if needed. In some cases, hygienist treatments are conducted in the same appointment as the check-up.
Each visit will also include a screening for signs of mouth cancer or other health conditions that can affect the mouth. If any further issues are discovered, your dentist will discuss the recommended next steps.
